1715_George Skene’s manuscript

These are the bagpipe tunes from George Skene’s manuscript book of 1715,

Adv.MS.5.2.21 in the National Library of Scotland, formerly the Library of the Faculty of Advocates. The rest of the book is fiddle music (with some of the filthiest tune titles ever committed to paper). As far as I know, these are the oldest notated examples of music explicitly intended for the bagpipes. All of them are variation sets on familiar Lowland Scots songs. I’ve kept as near to the original MS as ABC allows, any intentional changes are indicated in the tune headers.

Info from www.cpartington.plus.com/ :
Hornpipes of a theatrical persuasion, in every time signature imaginable! Seemingly originally published as four volumes of 30 tunes each, then consolidated into one volume.Tunes named for heroes of The Seven Years War (1756-63) suggest that the short volumes were published around that time and consolidated after that.

A Pocket Book for the Guitar,: With Directions Whereby Ev’ry Lady & Gentleman May Become Their Own Tuner, to Which Is Added Suitable to the Refin’d Taste of the present Age an Entertaining Collection of Songs, Duets, Airs, Minuets, Marches &c.
The second edition with additions.
London Printed for Longman, Lukey & Broderip at the Apollo, N° 26 Cheapside.

Info from IMSLP : Guitar in this case refers to the 18th century English Guitar, or cittern – with 6 courses rather than 6 single strings, tuned to a chord of C, also different from the modern Spanish guitar. The Renaissance cittern has another different tuning, but this has been tagged as cittern, as it is related more to that instrument than the guitar.

1778_Daniel DOW_A Collection of Ancient Scots Music

Info from WireStrungHarp.com:
A Collection of Ancient Scots Music for the violin, harpsichord or German flute: Never before printed consisting of ports, salutations, marches and pibrachs & c. (c. 1778) by Daniel Dow
Daniel or Donald Dow[1] was born around 1732, probably in the Perthshire parish of Monzie. He died aged 51 in Edinburgh where he had lived since 1765 and was buried in the Canongate Kirkyard in January 1783.
His early training is uncertain but he had been publishing his own music since 1773 and was one of the professional musicians regularly employed by the Musical Society of Edinburgh for their concerts. Most of his publications seem to have been printed purely by subscription and none of them are dated, although this work appears to post date 1776 and exists in at least two versions. Unlike his other works which consist of Scottish dance music, this collection has a wider sweep and shows signs of coming from more than one source. It includes four pipe tunes which appear to have been written down by a musically literate piper or by someone with a very close practical knowledge of piping.

It is certainly one of the important sources of traditional Scottish music. A full background study of the collection and Dow’s sources including his probable links to Angus Cumming (died 1780), of Grantown.

1780_A Collection of Strathspey or old Highland Reels-Angus Cumming

Info from hms.scot :

Glasgow University Library (GB-Gu): GB-Gu copy is 1st edition of 1780, self-published in Edinburgh by Cumming of Grantown. A second, subsequent edition was published in Glasgow in 1782 with two fewer tunes and an altered title: A Collection of Strathspeys or old Highland Reels. Subscribers list contains a very extensive list of Grants from around the globe, also ‘the celebrated’ James McPherson and Scottish antiquarian William Tytler. The tunes are confidently chosen, and the volume includes a Preface about the Strathspey and primitivism. Many tunes appear with English and Gaelic titles.

Info from New-York Heritage Digital Collection :
John Greenwood music book, ca. 1780
Creator Greenwood, John, 1760-1819
Contributors United States. Continental Army. Massachusetts Regiment, 15th
Institution New-York Historical Society
Description Manuscript book of music given to Greenwood by a British fife-major, probably after 1780. According to ‘Early American Secular Music and Its European Sources, 15891839: An Index’ (http://www.colonialdancing.org/Easmes/Biblio/B018536.htm, viewed August 6, 2012), the music is probably for German flute or violin, and it is a leisure collection for a gentleman and not music for use in the military as some sources suggest. The volume contains 87 numbered leaves. Leaves 18 and 24 are blank, and leaves 76-77 and 82-86 are lacking. Approximately 80 tunes are in the volume as well as biographical and historical notes added to the final leaves in the 19th and 20th centuries.

1789_Joshua Campbell_A Collection of New Reels & Highland Strathspeys

Info from hms.scot :

2nd Edition

This Glasgow publication contains mostly strathspeys, with lots of Campbells mentioned in tune titles. There are some variation sets, and strathspey-jig pairs, and a fiddle pibroch; also some tunes by William Marshall. Glen dates it as 1779 on the evidence of notices in a concert announcement; Gore dates it c.1786, presumably from GB-En Glen 327, apparently assuming it to be Campbell’s first collection. However, the GB-P binding has ‘Joshua Campbell’s 2nd Collection’, and J Murdoch Henderson dates it 1789, also suggesting this. The reasons for some libraries’ datings of [1786] are unclear. A third, shorter, edition of 36 pages with basses ‘Corrected by P. Urbani’ was published by Edinburgh music-sellers Urbani & Liston from their address at 10 Princes Street, where they traded from 1796-1806.

1792_Thomas Calvert_A Collection of Marches and Quicksteps, Strathspeys and Reels hms.scot :
Publisher : Kelso, Thomas Calvert
The book contains a mix of marches, tunes of local interest, country dances and cottilions, in a variety of settings, including several clearly for piano with violin accompaniment, with 3 parts simply marked ‘1st’, ‘2d’ and ‘Bass’. BUCEM dates this as c.1790, whilst SBTI suggests 1793-1802. Kidson noted inside the GB-Gm copy that the endpaper is watermarked 1791. Glen noted that N. Stewart’s address was 37 South Bridge Street from 1792-1802, and perhaps 1792 is the best guess, if the endpaper was made the previous year.

INFO : http://www.village-music-project.org.uk/info_files/miller_j_info.htm
The John Miller MS is in the A.K.Bell Library, Perth, Scotland, accession number possibly 34685, which is inscribed on the fly-leaf. We have worked from a good photocopy. We do not at present have a context for how the MS comes to be in Perth, other than the obvious martial nature of it and the fact that Perth is I believe the home of the Black Watch.
